How Long Does It Take to Paint a House? A Real Timeline (Interior & Exterior)

Website |  + posts

Most exterior house painting takes 3 to 7 days. A single interior room takes 1 to 2 days, and a whole-home interior takes 3 to 10 days, depending on size and prep. Here’s a recent exterior job on a two-story colonial in Bergen County, from the first wash to the final walkthrough. It’s a good example of where the days actually go.

The project: repainting a two-story colonial

The house had white wood clapboard siding, black shutters, black window trim and a black front door. The paint was chalking and peeling in sections, especially around the windows, and several trim boards had bare wood showing. The homeowners wanted to keep the same colors but have a finish that would last.

We started by covering every shrub, walkway and planting bed with tarps and drop cloths. Then we pressure washed the whole house to strip off dirt, mildew and chalky old paint.

Day 1: protecting the landscaping and washing the whole house before any prep starts.

Wet siding can’t be painted, so washing took the whole first day. By the next morning the wood was dry and we moved on to the part that decides how long any paint job lasts: prep.

Day two was the longest day of the job. We scraped loose paint from the clapboards and window trim down to sound wood, sanded the edges smooth, filled soft spots and caulked open gaps.

Once a section was scraped, we spot-primed every bare and patched area. Finish paint doesn’t bond well to raw wood, and skipping this step is why some exteriors start peeling within a couple of years.

Every scraped and bare spot gets primer before the finish coats go on.

On day three the painting itself began, and it moved quickly because the prep was done. We put two coats of white on the siding over days three and four. Then we cut in the black window casings and trim by hand, which is slow work because every line has to be clean against the white.

We left the shutters and front door for day five, once the body and trim were fully dry and we weren’t working around wet paint.

Shutters come last, once the body and trim are dry.

With the shutters done, we pulled every tarp, cleaned up the beds and walkways, and walked the house with the homeowners to touch up anything they pointed out.

How long this project took, and why

This house took 5 working days. A colonial this size with sound paint and little trim could be done in 3 or 4. Three things added time:

  • Prep: A full day of scraping, sanding and priming on older wood siding.
  • Trim detail: Black trim on white siding needs hand-brushed lines on every window.
  • Shutters and door: These are painted last and separately, which adds most of a day.

How long other painting projects take

Project Typical duration What affects it most
One interior room 1 to 2 days Wall repairs, ceilings, trim, color change
A few rooms (3 to 4) 2 to 4 days Furniture moving, number of colors
Whole-home interior 3 to 10 days Square footage, ceilings, doors and trim
Exterior, small or single-story home 3 to 4 days Scraping, priming, trim detail
Exterior, two-story colonial 4 to 6 days Ladder work, wood repairs, shutters
Exterior, large or three-story home 6 to 7+ days Height, staging, rot repair
Kitchen cabinets 4 to 7 days Door removal, sanding, cure time between coats
Deck staining 1 to 3 days Washing, dry time before stain, deck size

How long does it take to paint a house exterior?

Most exterior painting projects take 3 to 7 days. A ranch or Cape Cod in good condition sits at the low end, a two-story colonial like this one takes 4 to 6 days, and a large three-story home can take a week or more. Crew size matters too: a two-person crew may need a week for a job a four-person crew finishes in four days.

How long does it take to paint a room or a house interior?

One room takes 1 to 2 days: furniture, floor protection, patching and a first coat on day one, then the second coat and trim on day two. Three or four rooms take 2 to 4 days. A whole 2,000 sq ft interior with walls, ceilings and trim takes about 5 to 7 days, longer with doors, built-ins or big color changes.

What makes a painting job take longer

  • Wood repair: Rotted sills or clapboards must be replaced and dry before priming.
  • Color changes: Going from dark to light often needs an extra coat.
  • Height: High ceilings and three-story exteriors need more ladder time and setup.
  • Weather: Rain, humidity and cold nights stop exterior work, so we plan around the best painting season in New Jersey.
  • Lead-safe work: Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and lead-safe rules require containment and extra cleanup.

Living in your house during the work

You don’t need to move out. During exterior work, the inside of the house stays fully usable; the homeowners on this project stayed home the whole week. During interior work, we go room by room, cover furniture and floors, and clean up every evening. Bedrooms are usually ready to sleep in the same night.

Why rushing costs you a good finish

A painter who promises an exterior in two days is usually cutting prep or drying time. Paint over damp siding or loose paint looks fine for a season, then blisters and peels. We prioritize doing it right over hitting unrealistic deadlines.

Samuel's crew did an outstanding job painting the exterior of my cape cod home in Fair Lawn. The crew was punctual, hard working, and respectful to the neighbors. They ensured that we were completely satisfied with their work. The owner, Samuel Stuart☘️, is very personable and provided a very reasonable quote. This is third time in 24 years that we've had the house painted and it has never looked better. I would highly recommend Stuart Painters. 👍

I can not say enough good things about Stuart Painting. They did what two other companies failed to do which is to leave us with pristine walls and ceilings. No imperfections, perfectly clean and smooth and painted to perfection. They work quickly, protect your stuff and clean up well after themselves each and every day. If you need painting, skip the heartache of using a cheap handyman and use a real painter. You will be glad you did.
